British Blues – Early British Blues Clubs – Mothers Club – Memorabilia

Mothers Club, Erdington, Birmingham: Memorabilia – a selection of artifacts

Photographs

Pre Mothers Club when known as ‘The Carlton Ballroom’ – entrance was down the alley on the left with the club on the first floor above the shops. The alley (recent image above) was where we all queued to get in, often in the rain! There was a metal staircase in the alley leading to the first floor stage door with the punters entrance at the end of the alley. Membership cards at the ready – checked at the entrance – then charge up the stairs – at the top of the stairs there was a cloakroom to the right and bar to the left with the stage straight on and DJ’s booth on the left (the hang-out of DJ’s John Peel, Pete Drummond or Erskine).

Monthly Schedule

The monthly schedules were always subject to change – in fact Sunday 1st March featured Keef Hartley Band and Groundhogs (as replacement to Mississippi Fred McDowell who was ill). If a band was too big for the club’s capacity (e.g. The Jeff Beck Group), Birmingham Town Hall was used instead.
